If you’re replacing a business phone system in 2026, either by choice or because your old provider stopped supporting it, the shortlist usually comes down to a big-platform product like Zoom Phone or a traditional hosted VoIP provider. Both deliver calls over the internet; the differences are in ownership, features, and who you call when something breaks.

What they have in common

Either way, you get the core of modern business telephony: cloud-hosted service, desk phones and softphones, auto-attendants, voicemail-to-email, mobile apps, and portable numbers. Both run over your existing internet connection and depend on its quality (is your network VoIP-ready?).

Where Zoom Phone shines

  • Platform stability. Zoom is a large public company. After watching small resellers disappear, many businesses value that alone.
  • One app for everything. Calls, meetings, chat, and SMS in the client your team may already use.
  • Clean per-user pricing with unlimited or metered calling options.
  • Modern admin. Provisioning, call queues, and analytics without vendor tickets for every change.

Zoom sells the software platform. Your team or a partner handles deployment, network readiness, desk phone provisioning, and ongoing support.

Where traditional hosted VoIP holds its own

  • High-touch setups. Some providers still tailor complex call flows, analog integrations (door phones, paging, elevator lines), and unusual requirements more flexibly.
  • Industry-specific needs. Fax-heavy workflows, overhead paging, or analog gateway requirements are sometimes better served by a specialized provider.
  • Contracted support. A managed VoIP contract can include the human support layer big platforms don’t sell.

The trade-off is the one this blog exists to warn about, with smaller providers, you’re betting on the company itself. Do the diligence: here’s what to check.

Our honest take

For most small and mid-sized businesses we work with, Zoom Phone plus a local partner combines platform stability with local engineering for network preparation, SIP phone provisioning, porting, and responsive support.

GTech designs and deploys Zoom Phone and other hosted VoIP systems, prepares the network underneath, and stays on for support. For businesses coming off an unsupported system, including former Rimrock customers, we handle recovery, porting, migration, and training.
